Veterans’ Preference Policy
Pursuant to Personnel Rule 4.19, veterans and the spouses or widows(ers) of veterans may be awarded additional points in any open examination process resulting in a numerical score. Points will be added to the final grade for any successful candidate who is not currently a County employee.
Veteran’s Preference points will be awarded based on the following criteria:
Applicants who wish to receive Veterans’ Preference Points must indicate this on their employment application and provide proof of eligibility as described below.
VETERAN – 5 Points
All veterans who have served in any branch of the United States (U.S.) armed forces for 90 consecutive days under honorable conditions, and all National Guard or military reserve activated by the Federal Government for any period of time.
Required Documentation
- Submit a copy of your Department of Defense Form DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) or DD-1300 (Report of Casualty)
- The documentation must clearly show the length of service and an honorable discharge.
DISABLED VETERAN – 10 Points
In addition to meeting the above-described criteria, must have a service-connected disability rated at no less than ten percent (10%) by an authorized agency in the U.S. Government.
Required Documentation
- All documentation listed under Veteran, and
- Proof of service-connected disability, such as a Veterans Affairs (V.A.) summary of benefits letter showing a disability rating of 10% or greater
- If a V.A. letter is unavailable, verification from the San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs may be accepted.
VETERAN’S SPOUSE/WIDOW(ER) – 5 Points
Must be the spouse of any such United States veteran separated from the service under honorable conditions who, while in service was disabled, thereby being permanently prevented from engaging in gainful employment, or is the widow(er) of any such veteran who died or was killed in such service and who has not remarried.
Required Documentation
- Marriage certificate
- D.D.214 or D.D.1300 for the veteran
- Proof of disability or death in service (as applicable)

Please note that points may not be awarded if your documentation is not received by the deadline. Applicants who have already provided Veterans’ Preference verification do not need to resubmit documentation for future applications.
