What Happens After You Apply
After you submit your application, the next steps happen behind the scenes. It’s important to continue monitoring your email, as most updates and notifications will be sent electronically. Be sure to check your inbox regularly, including spam or junk folders.
Your application is reviewed to determine whether you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. This review focuses on the information you provided in your application, including your work history, education, licenses, certifications, and responses to any supplemental questions.
The examination process may include any combination of the following steps:
- A written examination of technical knowledge, skills, and abilities
- An oral examination
- A performance examination (i.e., typing, equipment operation, agility/physical fitness)
- A competitive evaluation of application materials for measurement of education, experience, and training
Once the qualification review is complete, recruiters develop a list of eligible candidates. These eligibility lists are used by County departments to consider candidates for current and upcoming vacancies.
San Bernardino County has over 40 departments, and your name may be referred to one or multiple departments based on their hiring needs. You may receive contact from different departments for potential interviews, sometimes from phone numbers you don’t recognize.
When a department receives a list of eligible candidates, the hiring manager determines how many applicants to interview. Some departments may choose to interview a select number of candidates, while others may interview all candidates on the list. These decisions are made at the department’s discretion and in accordance with County recruitment rules.
Being referred to a department does not guarantee an interview, but it does mean your application met the requirements and is under consideration.
You can review the status of any application you’ve submitted by logging into your account on governmentjobs.com. Your account will show updates such as when your application has been reviewed and when your name has been referred to a department for consideration.
Because departments may contact candidates at different times, it’s important to stay prepared. Keep your contact information up to date, continue checking your email, and be ready to respond if a department reaches out for next steps.
