Interview Ready
If you’ve received a call or email from a County department, congratulations—you’ve moved forward in the hiring process. This means your application met the minimum qualifications and a department would like to learn more about you. The next step is preparing for the interview.
Start by reviewing the job posting again so you’re familiar with the duties, requirements, and desired skills. Be sure to note the interview format, date, time, and location (in person, virtual, or panel interview), and respond promptly to confirm your availability.
Prepare Using the SMART Model
Many interview questions are designed to understand how you’ve handled real work situations. Using the SMART model can help you provide clear, organized, and effective answers.
- Specific – Start with a clear example. Briefly explain the situation so the panel understands the context.
- Measurable – Include results with numbers or outcomes when possible (time saved, engagement increased, number of people served, etc.).
- Achievable / Action – Focus on the actions you personally took to solve the problem or complete the task.
- Relevant – Tie the example to the skills required for the job (leadership, communication, problem-solving, project management, etc.).
- Time-Bound – Mention the timeline of the work or how quickly the results were achieved.
Using this approach helps interviewers clearly see your skills, experience, and problem-solving abilities.
Be Interview Ready
Prepare examples from your work, education, or volunteer experience that demonstrate your qualifications for the position. Practice answering questions out loud, dress professionally, and arrive early or log in on time.
Remember, interviews are an opportunity to show how your experience aligns with the role and how you can contribute to the department. Preparing ahead of time helps you feel confident and ready to succeed.
