WORKING IN RETIREMENT
As much as you enjoy retirement, you may be considering returning to work for San Bernardino County. If you would like to return to work while still receiving your SBCERA pension, here are some important things to know:
- All SBCERA retirees returning to work in any capacity, including as an independent contractor or through a staffing agency, must be authorized to return by SBCERA.
- Work cannot exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year.
- No SBCERA retiree may work for an employer in the same retirement system if they have received unemployment insurance compensation arising out of that employer relationship in the prior 12 months.
- The re-employment position must be one of limited duration, which is 18 consecutive months.
- Not following proper procedures may result in a suspension of your monthly benefit and/or retroactive collection of your benefits.
How to Begin the Reemployment Process Post Retirement
THE DEPARTMENT AND RETURNING RETIREE MUST COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING FORMS:
- Contact the department’s Human Resources (HR) Business Partner for assistance in completing the SBCERA Returning Retiree Certification Form and the County Returning Retiree Form.
- Return both completed forms to the EBSD: Mikayla.Kissel@hr.sbcounty.gov and ebsd@hr.sbcounty.gov.
- EBSD will remit the certification form to SBCERA and will notify the department once reemployment is approved.
- The department may begin retiree’s reemployment once SBCERA approval is received.
